Hello friend --

riotgamesbody.pngPut your game face on
What goes on behind the scenes of the maker of one of today’s wildly popular online video games? Last Thursday, we took a group of students from Pasadena City College interested in gaming and design to the West Los Angeles headquarters of Riot Games to discover that themselves during a company tour that shared a peak into how the worldwide sensation "League of Legends" is created. Students also spoke with Riot Games reps on the competitive field of gaming and what skills sets game developers are seeking in college grads.

Grafbody.pngAdvisor updates
Say "hello!" to our newest Startup Development Program advisor, Jocelyn Graf! She is business development whiz whose consultancy firm provides training for job seekers in groups underrepresented in tech. Her background in academia and entrepreneurship includes a stint in South Korea, where she founded a biomedical research editing and translation business among several other ventures, but she’s glad to be back in L.A., where she can still exercise her Korean and Spanish speaking skills.

And opportunities are abound for Julie Thorne Engels, who will be relocating to Colorado and expanding her marketing agency across state lines. But don’t expect her to slow down; she will continue on as an advisor resource for startups seeking brand and marketing strategy help. Congrats, Julie!

SeePoliticalbody.pngVoting, simplified
Voter turnout in Culver City got a lift in last week’s local elections when Bixel startup client SeePolitical teamed with the city to help educate voters on local ballot measures through sharing the company’s fun and educational videos. This year’s historic record of 23 percent voter turnout vastly improved upon last year’s 14.2 percent, and also dwarves voter turnout in neighboring cities that also had elections on the same day.
