Hello friend --

weekofmakingbody.pngCelebrating 2016 National Week of Making
While President Obama earlier this year declared June 17-23 as the second-ever National Week of Making, the Maker Movement -- empowering creators, inventors and tinkerers of all ages to turn their ideas into reality and supporting STEM opportunities in schools, thus leading to further accelerating advanced manufacturing in the U.S. -- has been steadily catching steam across the nation in recent years. In addition to flagship fairs in California’s Bay Area, Washington, D.C., and New York, makerspaces have been cropping up in L.A., too! While you’ll typically find them in traditional spaces like college campuses or libraries, check out some of our favorite makers that may just be around the corner from you.

Collaborate for L.A. STEM education
Hundreds of L.A. business leaders are expected to come together on June 22 for the 2016 State of STEM event at California Science Center, presented by the L.A. Area Chamber, in partnership with L.A. Regional STEM Hub. This annual convening aims to advance STEM education in the region, exploring business engagement opportunities for multi-industry collaboration. Get more info here.

riotgamesbody.pngStudents visit Riot Games for a lesson in creative writing
True or false: If you can’t code, kiss “goodbye” to landing a job in tech. On May 19, a classroom of 23 students from Venice High School learned that’s assuredly not the case when they visited the West L.A. headquarters of Riot Games for a pilot creative writing workshop, where they had the opportunity to hear from coaches who create the dynamic worlds within the company's gaming successes. Students also learned about the fundamentals of character traits, designing their own characters and how to construct story lines.

Thank you to our friends at Riots Games for hosting our students for a day!

innovatenow.pngSmall businesses learn about improved solutions
We’re proud to have helped produce “Innovate Now,” a special small business workshop drawing more than 100 attendees, on the importance of innovation for small business success. The workshop was featured at the 2016 Small Business Awards on May 24, presented by the Chamber and the U.S. Small Business Administration. Thank you to panelists Sanjay Kucheria of IT solutions firm Trinus Corp., Patrick Wolf of Magnopus, Bryan Moeller of Wells Fargo and moderator (and startup client) Sky Kelley of Avisare! See event photos.

Become a better leader for L.A.
Our Chamber affiliate partner Southern California Leadership Network is actively recruiting for their Leadership Southern California 2017 class! Join a cohort of 40 mid- to senior-level executives from across private industry, government and the nonprofit sector for this experiential “master class” that aims to help diverse leaders understand the Southern California region’s assets and opportunities. They’ve extended their deadline to June 17. Learn more here.
