Hello friend --

B2_ITA.pngInterns try tech on for size B1_ITA.png
Ask any employer what’s at the top of their must-haves list in a great employee, and “a good fit” wouldn’t strike anyone as a surprise. It’s that right combination of go-getter attitude, zeal for improvement and working well with others, that never gets tired. Fit was also top of mind for 20 area college co-eds that recently completed a special summer learning opportunity with the City of Los Angeles' Information Technology Agency, facilitated by Bixel Exchange, in partnership with the LA HI-TECH regional consortium. In a special Aug. 11 wrap-up session at ITA's downtown Los Angeles headquarters, students recounted their experiences, expounding on the practical knowledge gained from leading professionals in the field, working on a variety of city IT projects, at different levels of maintenance, testing and building of websites, servers and databases. The event concluded with a presentation of certificates to the students, given by their supervisors. We wish them great success in the new school year!

Autonomous vehicles -- the next transportation frontierB3_ITC.png
Makers and transportation planning agencies agreed at the Aug. 16 Innovation & Technology Council meeting that Los Angeles can adopt automated, driverless cars sooner if the entities work together to move forward on adaptive policy. A diverse panel of transportation experts consisting of ride-sharing company Lyft, Southern California Association of Governments, and Iteris, an intelligent transportation systems firm, discussed the challenging road to regulation and implementation. Some challenges include maintaining road infrastructure, addressing radical changes in the labor structure, and enforcement support.

A healthy financial outlook starts here
Every business decision must be made with an eye toward the bottom line. How else would you keep your doors open, otherwise? Tuesday’s LA Law Library workshop with Bixel advisor and accounting expert Mackenzie Chambers of Square Root Financial helped navigate more than 20 entrepreneurs through accounting essentials, including fundamentals of financial modeling, the importance of cash flow, and key financial statements that provide an insightful look into the health of your company.

Our own Kevin Lew and commercial banking expert Raul Yanez of Pacific Western Bank will talk on raising money and how to attract investors, at the next workshop on Sept. 6.

B4_MayorsCup.pngMayor Garcetti seeks your ideas for L.A.
Do you have an innovative solution to building more affordable housing, or a brilliant strategy to increase job opportunities for low-income Angelenos? Well, the mayor wants to put your ideas to work! The Mayor’s Cup is an incentivized pitch competition bringing together academic institutions, the Mayor’s office, businesses and nonprofits. L.A.’s higher-education community of entrepreneurs and visionaries can submit ideas tackling five different problem statements around land use for civic engagement and growing our local economy. Check out the upcoming the information session Sept. 14, and get full details. The submission deadline is Oct. 5. Professionals who want to serve as mentors to these teams are also encouraged to apply.

B5_mylucke1.pngSpotlight on …
... Emily Webb, CEO and co-founder of Bixel Exchange startup MyLücke – an on-demand, private parking marketplace that eases hourly, daily, weekly and monthly parking for drivers. Think about an Airbnb for parking spaces, that helps alleviate traffic congestion in busy cities like Los Angeles. Webb gives her take on managing risk as a new startup.

As an entrepreneur, I believe that risk is relative. Throughout my journey in building MyLücke, the business model was not a risk to me. The idea of building a platform that allows people to monetize their private, underutilized parking space is both intuitive and safe. I have no doubt that this is a sustainable and intelligent solution, and a bit of a game-changer in the parking industry.

B6_mylucke2.pngLuckily, the shared economy has been unveiling in many facets of our day-to-day lives, from Airbnb to Uber. Consumers are accustomed to sharing their homes and vehicles, and sharing their parking spaces is just the next evolution of this process. We are fully engulfed in an emerging market that has incredible potential. With our company, I feel as though there is more opportunity at stake than risk, but the key is to capitalize on the opportunity and build a promising road map for the growth and success of the entity. I am grateful to be challenged every day by my own vision and fortunate enough to be able to immerse my passion and perseverance into execution, and that, to me, mitigates risk.

B7_mylucke3.pngLife is a risk in itself. There may be uncertainty in choosing one decision over another, but the key is to be confident in whatever risk it is that you think you’re taking. Making wise decisions as a visionary and surrounding yourself with people who support and help execute your vision can hedge risk. Through perseverance, trial and error, and teamwork, the spectrum of risk begins to fade and the foundation of success for a company starts to gain momentum. To me, risk is another form of opportunity; it all depends on the lens through which you view the world.

Until we sync again,
