B1_PFAD.pngDeadline EXTENDED: Showcase your company in a unique way
Business and tech leaders now have until TOMORROW to sign up for Principal for a Day 2016 on Nov. 4, one of the biggest volunteer opportunities of the year, to shadow education administration and teachers in L.A. schools for one morning to gain insights on successes achieved and challenges faced. Participation is the first step to laying the foundation for future partnership opportunities between schools and businesses, with the mutual goal of creating an educated and skilled talent pipeline! Get more information here, and reach out to Sergio Rosas, 213.580.7578, to get started.

B3_survey.pngLet your voice be heard: Help shape the outcome of the 2016 Global Startup Ecosystem Report
Every year, our partner Startup Genome (formerly Compass Research) conducts research to build the Global Startup Ecosystem Ranking. Their insights enable us to measure the performance of startups in L.A. and benchmark our ecosystem against other leading startup hubs. This report garners the attention of huge investors, and it’s absolutely crucial that we are properly represented. We’re partnering with their team of experts and are asking YOU to contribute to this important research. Take just a few minutes out of your day to complete this survey today and be heard

B2_ITC.pngData security and safety at the center of internet of things discussion
Though the concept of ubiquitous connectivity was once futuristic, the realization of the internet of things reflected in today’s $1.4 trillion market of smart devices is simply astonishing. But not everyone is embracing the notion of having his or her data collected in the name of operational efficiency. “The tech world frightens people, but we have to be smart about how we respond to these things,” said the California Legislative Technology and Innovation Caucus’ Assemblyman Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica) at yesterday's Innovation & Technology Council meeting. Bloom was supported by Caucus co-chair, Assembly Majority Leader Ian Calderon (D-Whittier), who emphasized that market-driven solutions should rule. Ring Chief Technology Officer Joshua Roth also provided insights into the safety and security ethos behind his company's success, and the need for cross collaboration between industry, government and higher education to update and improve policy surrounding usage.

B4_forum.pngSouthland Latino students joined national conversation on higher education accessibility
U.S. Secretary of Education John King Jr. visited the region last week as part of a town hall forum hosted by the White House Initiative on Education Excellence for Hispanics. King helped share the release of a follow-up guide to “¡Gradúate! Financial Aid Guide to Success,” which helps Hispanic students and families navigate the college application process. Bixel Exchange helped select more than a dozen first-generation Latino college students from East Los Angeles College, Los Angeles Trade Technical College and UCLA to participate in the forum and share stories of their own pursuit of higher education.

B5_vator.pngInnovators surface for Vator Splash
Entrepreneurs flocked to this year's Vator Splash LA pitch competition and conference, attended by some of L.A.'s leading tech startups, established companies, venture capital firms and accelerators, at Santa Monica's Loews Hotel. Bixel startup founders got a peek at some other hot startups during the products showcase (kudos to one of our own, RufusLabs, which was a hit!) ahead of some inspiring panel talks. And congrats to our friend ArbiClaims who placed second in the competition! We're proud to have been Vator's production partner, and we thank all of our amazing volunteers for coming out. Until next year! View photos from the event.

Until we sync again,
