Startup LAunch team teaches entrepreneurship at USC
Last month, Kat Yalung and Elianne Rodriguez joined Startup LAunch advisor Shirin Salemnia’s USC Viterbi School of Engineering students for a class on “Using GIS Technology for Social Impact.” Kat covered entrepreneurship, debunking myths and empathy mapping, which is a tool used to gain a better understanding of the end user through scenario simulation and imagining the user through their five senses. The lecture included common characteristics of entrepreneurs and conceptions versus reality.

The class focused on using geographic information systems to forward a social cause by compiling geographic data, creating and using maps and analyzing the results, and building a social impact technology product or business.





L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline Director helping shape the workforce of the future
Lindsey Heisser, director of the L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline, traveled to the Bay Area last week to speak at Stanford's "Shaping the Workforce of the Future" event series. The panel, "Translating Market Demand for Skills into Programs and Curricula," focused on access and exposure for underrepresented youth pursuing tech employers, and was followed by a design-thinking workshop. She was joined by Dean Dan Schwartz, Stanford Graduate School of Education; Caz Pereira of Growth Sector; Carrie Varoquiers of Workday Foundation; Guy Halfteck of Knack; B.J. Schone of Atlassian; and Renee Franzwa of EdSurge.





Kat Yalung judges CSUN Bull Ring Semi-Final
On April 3, Bixel Exchange Startup LAunch Director Kat Yalung was on hand to judge the semi-finals of the third annual California State University, Northridge (CSUN) Bull Ring New Venture Competition. Hosted by CSUN's David Nazarian College of Business and Economics, the Bull Ring serves as a launch pad for innovative new ventures from CSUN students while providing access and exposure to mentors, coaching and potential investors. Twenty student teams presented their trade-show style displays as they pitched their new venture ideas for the opportunity to win a grand prize of $20,000 in the finals.





Bixel Exchange joins more than 200 Birmingham High seniors at career fair
On April 5, Bixel Exchange's L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline team member Jaideep Upadhyay attended Birmingham Community Charter High School's career fair. The event was a huge success, impacting more than 200 graduating high school seniors. At our table, attendees got the opportunity to learn about our amazing work connecting students to tech employers in L.A., and how they can get involved in our program!
