b2.jpgUpdate on Nike internships and Pensole Academy

As part of Bixel Exchange and Nike’s partnership on its groundbreaking DiversityxDesign apprenticeship program, our L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline team journeyed to Portland, OR, to support our 13 L.A.-based, community college apprentices. This week, the apprentices presented initial design concepts to their managers and mentors at Nike after a one-month intensive design curriculum at Pensole Academy, the first phase of their six-month apprenticeship.

DiversityxDesign is a first-of-its-kind apprenticeship program Nike developed in partnership with Bixel Exchange and the L.A. Area Chamber. Building on Bixel’s strong relationships with L.A. area community colleges, DiversityxDesign aims to create a national model for finding hidden design talent in our community colleges, beginning in Los Angeles. Over the past three months, the L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline team has worked closely with community colleges to prepare students for application and portfolio submissions and an all-day creative combine that ultimately selected the 13 apprentices. Shout out to our students who continue to impress and exceed our employers' expectations!

b3.jpgBixel Exchange joins Chamber President & CEO to share our impact on #techLA

Bixel Exchange was on deck as Maria S. Salinas, president & CEO of the L.A. Area Chamber, kicked off her first leg of the Chamber’s L.A. Connects listening tour at Toolbox LA alongside Carmen Palafox, partner at Make in LA. Palafox shared the progress and impact that Toolbox has had in the community, as well as thoughts on how the L.A. Area Chamber can connect and support businesses throughout the L.A. region, specifically in the tech sector.

At the event, Startup LAunch Director Kat Yalung was proud to report on our impact on entrepreneurs and startups in 2018 and our continued efforts to connect L.A.’s diverse, underrepresented community to opportunities in tech. This listening tour seeks to connect resources like Bixel Exchange with local community partners and businesses to further achieve the mission of the Chamber for fostering a healthy and inclusive economy. b4.jpgCongratulations to Screen Door Labs on being selected for SXSW Pitch

Bixel Exchange is proud to announce that Screen Doors Laboratories, “an SLP-portfolio startup,” will be one of five L.A. based startups pitching at SXSW Pitch. Tech companies specializing in everything from blockchain to health and wearable technology will compete before a live audience and a panel of expert judges at SXSW Pitch (formerly SXSW Accelerator). The average takeaway from the event is around $2.3 million, but companies have raised as much as $491 million.

Screen Door Labs makes augmented reality software specifically for team communications in the firefighting industry, and they are a signatory to L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti’s PledgeLA initiative. Screen Door Labs is a graduate of Grid110’s Accelerator program and became a part of the Startup LAunch Program to continue growing their enterprise.
