Nike DiversityxDesign apprenticeship update

Earlier this month, Bixel Exchange traveled back to Portland to check in with our community college apprentices at Nike. Our college partners, including Santa Monica College, L.A. Trade-Tech, Long Beach City College and L.A. County Workforce Development Aging & Community Services, joined the trip to see the progress the apprentices have made since their journey started in January. The group also enjoyed a tour of Nike’s campus and a team dinner with the scholars. “I am SO PROUD to be a part of this experience,” said Sean, an apprentice and L.A. Trade-Tech student.

DiversityxDesign is a first-of-its-kind apprenticeship program Nike developed in partnership with Bixel Exchange and the L.A. Area Chamber aiming to create a national model for finding hidden design talent in our community colleges, starting with L.A.

Bixel Exchange joins ACCESS Washington, D.C.

L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline Director Lindsey Heisser traveled to D.C. as part of the Chamber’s annual ACCESS Washington, D.C. trip. Heisser spoke to members of Congress about tech policy and higher education opportunities. These trips are essential to our mission to ensure all students have access to education and career opportunities in technology. By talking to our elected officials and community partners directly, we can advance policies that open the path for students in need, specifically around post-secondary education and job readiness.

Need more proof that women are fighting their way to the top?

Seattle-based data firm Pitchbook has released their VC Female Founders Dashboard, a deep dive into U.S. investment trends for women in venture capitalism over the last 11 years. L.A. is third on the list of deals closed by women with $5.4 billion invested in startup companies. Startup LAunch is working front and center to prepare startups with the right tools to obtain funding. And yes, the program is run by a team of all-star women with a laser-like focus of getting startups to reach their goals! If you are interested in working with other powerful female-led firms, take a look at Pitchbook’s article and dig a little deeper into what this means for the near future of investment funding and entrepreneurship.
