L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline’s Emily Alonso traveled to Philadelphia to attend the Aspen Institute Opportunity Youth Forum. This annual spring convening brings together leaders from backbone opportunity youth serving organizations and their collaborative partners, including youth leaders, institutions of higher education, community-based organizations, foundations, the private sector and government. Several notable speakers led the conversations around criminal justice reform, innovative workforce solutions for connecting opportunity youth to careers and healing-centered solutions to career pathways. This convening and partnership with the Aspen Institute is helping to guide our efforts in Los Angeles so that Bixel Exchange can better serve our opportunity youth and guide them towards reaching their career goals.



b2_snap.jpgSnap Partner Summit invites Bixel Exchange and Snap Design Academy alumni

On April 4, Snap Inc. hosted their first ever Snap Partner Summit, an exclusive, invite-only event where they unveiled new features and products. The L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline team and our Snap Design Academy alumni were among the group that had the chance to attend and witness the innovative announcements and demos that Snap had to share with its tightly curated network. The one-day event featured partner showcases, panels and immersive artificial reality experiences. Snap Inc. CEO Evan Spiegel and CTO Bobby Murphy were the keynote speakers. They spoke to the audience about how they are making Snapchat even more collaborative with other apps, allowing developers to integrate Snap Stories with their own app products, giving creatives more tools for content creation. They also announced the Snap Audience Network, an exciting new opportunity for developers to monetize their apps with Snap Ads. Learn more.



b3_EWDD.jpgBixel Exchange presents at EWDD’s 2019 Annual Plan Community Meeting

The City of Los Angeles' Economic and Workforce Development Department (EWDD) invited Bixel Exchange to present research about the budding tech industry at the 2019 Annual Plan Community Meeting: Opportunities in the Tech Sector. Sean Arian and Lindsey Heisser presented LinkedIn and city-wide data which highlighted the fastest growing occupations, skills gaps and top employers in the region. The duo then took a deep dive into our tech competency models before opening up a conversation with attendees about how we can prepare our youth for tech career pathways by providing them with access to educational on-ramps, industry exposure and on-the-job training through internships.



b4_LAOCRC.jpgBixel Exchange welcomes LAOCRC to the L.A. Area Chamber building

On April 19, Bixel Exchange joined the ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly opened, satellite Los Angeles/Orange County Regional Consortia (LAOCRC) office in the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce building. LAOCRC Executive Director Alex Davis spoke to all the great work the consortium is doing to strengthen the community college system in the Southern California region. Bixel Exchange and UNITE-LA have been working with community college faculty to connect students to tech and health career pathways, so having LAOCRC as a nearby partner will only strengthen our efforts to bring opportunities to those in need. We welcome the LAOCRC staff to our building!

On April 11, Bixel Exchange and the L.A. Area Chamber joined NEXTGEN: Seize the Opportunity, hosted by the United Way of Greater Los Angeles. Startup LAunch Director Kat Yalung moderated a panel of leading entrepreneurs and investors that shared their startup journey and discussed how the principles of innovation and entrepreneurship can be used to better the community. Panelists included Qiana Patterson, HopSkipDrive; Kent Yoshimura, NeuroGum; and investor and entrepreneur Jason Spradlin. Andrea Nunn and Anahi Godinez, part of the Chamber’s membership team, also attended to learn about what the next generation of leaders are doing for L.A.

  Government Contracts: Steady Income for Your Business

At this L.A. Law Library Business Series event, learn about government contracts, which can be a great source of steady revenue for small businesses. Officials from local and state agencies will present information on how to locate public solicitations, certification requirements, the bidding process and how contracts are awarded.
