Hello friend --

b1_TuFuturoLA.jpgThank you to all that attended Your Future LA: Beyond the Diploma

We want to thank everyone that attended Your Future LA: Beyond the Diploma, from our volunteers and panelists to the more than 8,000 students and their parents who came to prepare for college and careers. Bixel Exchange hosted a series of workshops, titled “Exploring Careers in Technology,” where students learned about different career paths and the diverse education backgrounds of professionals in these high-demand jobs. The students walked away with a better understanding of the vast array of career opportunities, gaining insight into the tech field and how best to achieve their career goals. From everyone at Bixel Exchange, thanks for making this event a success!

On Oct. 22, Startup LAunch Director Kat Yalung was the emcee for the first day of MWC 2019 at the 4YFN startup stage in L.A. She met with various innovative entrepreneurs and high-level executives from companies like RYOT, NFL, Forbes and Haptik. Even some of our partners and startup founders were in attendance, including Anna Barber from Techstars L.A. and Todd Terrazas from AI LA. Kat hosted a mix of panels with different information ranging from "Investing Opportunities in 5G," the "Next Frontiers of Music Streaming," "Women4Tech: AI Ethics, Diversity & Inclusion," "Best Practices for Fundraising" and so much more.

Startup LAunch celebrates startup wins

The Startup LAunch team attended the TechSparks pitch competition where two of our startups, Pickl and Challenger, presented their pitches to a panel of judges. Pickl won the night’s competition and will be getting an exclusive meeting with the TechSparks team and a meeting with the Pasadena Angels.

Manatee also celebrates a big win as they were selected winners of the 2019 Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) Gamifying Pediatrics Demo Day. They were the only team that was unanimously voted into the top three by all 12 judges. The team will receive $20,000 in seed grants, a pilot and research support from CHLA.

We are always our participants’ biggest cheerleaders so if you have any wins you’d like to share, feel free to reach out to Elianne or Antonio and we’ll show you some love!

Assemblymember Ed Chau breaks down the CCPA

On Oct. 15, Bixel Exchange joined the Chamber’s policy team to hear from Assemblymember Ed Chau, chair of the Assembly Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection, as he shared details on the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), slated to go into effect January 2020. The assemblymember presented on the history, components and upcoming regulations on the CCPA. He also led a lively discussion regarding CCPA compliance and impacts for businesses. Our startup advocates in attendance shared their concerns on how data gathering and new restrictions will affect how tech companies do business, ultimately impacting their growth. However, the bill intends to protect the ways in which consumer data is being handled and used by companies.

The Chamber’s Innovation & Technology Council is an important way to stay ahead of the curve and make sure your small business knows what is going on with both public and private enterprises that affect the state of California. Stay tuned for details about the next meeting!
